Which God?

Very often in a discussion about the existence of God the question is asked: But which God? It’s a good question!

False gods.

There are many different deities and concepts of a divine being promoted around the world. Major and minor world religions have their own view of God and often will have their own holy books for which they claim special status.

The true God.

In contending for the existence of God I am not interested in any way in defending the pantheon of false gods that exist in the mind of sinful mankind. There is one true and living God – the God of the Bible. The eternal Jehovah existing in the trinity of His persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God reveals Himself in two ways to mankind:

1. In creation. This revelation leaves men without excuse! “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” (Ro 1:20-21Ro 1:20-21
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: so...: or, that they may be 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

2. In the Bible. The Bible is the self-revelation of God to mankind. It is the authoritative and final written revelation of God and His purpose to men.

Every religious opinion is to be tested by the clear teaching of Scripture. This is what determines whether that concept is correct or false. The Lord Jesus said “…thy word is truth.” (John 17:17John 17:17
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

What is truly Christian?

The discussion is often further complicated by the fact that there are many diverse bodies presenting themselves as Christian and even claiming Biblical authority for their views. For example, in the minds of many people ‘Christian’ = Roman Catholic; and so the views of the Roman Catholic Church, or its head, the Pope are taken as being the standard of Christian/Biblical thinking. This is a mistake!

The Bible is the sole definition of what is Christian and what is of God. The Church of Rome, in the light of Scripture, is a false church, teaching gross error and blasphemy against God’s word, and filled with polluted anti-christian practices. This only makes the work of genuine believers to counteract the denial of God all the more difficult. If the only experience of God, Christ and the Bible that a man had was from the Church of Rome it is easy to understand that man professing atheism!

At the end of the day, it is not what I or any church group claims to be the truth that counts. The only matter of importance is what God Himself has revealed. The Bible must speak for itself.

A personal responsibility and challenge.

The Apostle Paul preaching to heathen philosophers in Athens said, “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:” (Acts 17:24-27Acts 17:24-27
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
