When Christians advance atheism

It might seem bizarre, but there is a very common way in which professing Christians do a great deal to further the cause of atheism in society. It is the responsibility of God’s people to advance the cause of God, not to hinder it by advancing the cause of those who deny God and refuse to acknowledge Him or His word. And yet, very often those who refuse God can claim vindication of their views from the behaviour of professing Christians!

1. God’s people advance the cause of atheism when they live in disobedience to God’s word, the Bible.

  • When a professing Christian defies the commands of God and openly lives in disobedience to God’s word, why should we expect the ungodly to do any better??
  • When those who claim to be Christians give no evidence of a fear of God in their lives why should the wicked fear Him??
  • The reality in the church today is that most who claim to be Christians live as if God did not exist! They do not read or obey His word; they give no thought to His Laws and how they affect every aspect of human life. Why should we expect the unconverted to acknowledge God??
  • This sin is most clearly seen in apostate Christian churches. Many churches are nominally ‘Christian’ and yet openly defy the word of God. They pervert His truth with corrupt versions of His word; they deny the central doctrines of Scripture, including Christ’s virgin birth, His once-for-all atonement at Calvary etc.

2. This kind of behaviour is very wrong on the part of the Christian.

Jehoshaphat, King of Judah was challenged on this very point by the prophet Jehu, after he had formed an alliance with the wicked King Ahab: “And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD.” (2Chron 19:2 AV) Helping to advance the cause of those who deny God, as Ahab did, is a sin on the part of God’s people. King David was rebuked in a similar way over his adultery with Bathsheba: “…by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme…” (2Samuel 12:14 AV) When God’s people sin they make it easier for the wicked to sin and make it more difficult for the Church of Christ to maintain a faithful witness to God in the earth.

Such sin is to be repented of! The first step in undoing the harm done to cause of God by personal sin, sinful alliances, etc is to turn from those things. Get right with God! Confess sin and obtain the forgiveness of God. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1John 1:9John 1:9
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

3. The best opposition against the agenda of atheism that any Christian can raise is to live in obedience to God. Live to show that God IS real. Live a life that exhibits the fact that you walk with God, talk with God and work for God! Let it be seen that God is your God; that He is not just a religious profession but a living reality every moment in your life. Genuine Christianity is always visible. It conforms openly with the standard of godliness revealed in Scripture. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (James 1:22James 1:22
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

On the Judgment day, those who live like an atheist – even though they claim to be Christian – will be seen to be an atheist in reality and be lost forever. “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Mt 7:21-23Mt 7:21-23
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

What a wonderful reminder to all of us that claim Christ as our Saviour ! Our behaviour never goes unnoticed. Everything we do is monitored by someone .. our family, our neighbours, our co-workers, and most certainly our God. Although there are always those who would mock us, there are also those who are watching, with a hope in their hearts, that God is real. Oh that we as God’s people, would take our walk very seriously in these dark days ! Thank you Pastor Foster for this timely article.
