Science – the solid foundation of atheist faith!

The cry of the atheist so often is Science! Not the Bible! Man’s scientific knowledge is advanced as the solid basis upon which any discussion of God or faith matters should be based. In effect science becomes the ‘bible’ of the atheist. But it is worth asking the question: Is what is touted as science such a dependable basis of faith?

I was interested to read the following news story:

  • Ancient Teeth May ‘Change Whole Picture of Evolution’

Published December 27, 2010 | Associated Press

Israeli archaeologists say they may have found the earliest evidence yet for the existence of modern man.

A Tel Aviv University team excavating a cave in central Israel said Monday they found teeth about 400,000 years old. The earliest Homo sapiens remains found until now are half that old.

Archaeologist Avi Gopher said Monday further research is needed to solidify the claim. If it does, he says, “this changes the whole picture of evolution.”

Accepted scientific theory is that Homo sapiens originated in Africa and migrated out.

Sir Paul Mellars, a prehistory expert at Cambridge University, says the find is “important,” but it is premature to say the remains are from modern man. He says they are more likely related to man’s ancient relatives, the Neanderthals.

Read it online here.

It is to be observed that if this scientific discovery is validated then evolutionary ‘science’ will need to be updated because “this changes the whole picture of evolution” according to the cited scientist.

Another story!

Click here to read a similar story with yet another revised evolutionary time line published by the BBC. The reality is that evolutionary ‘science’ is a guessing game in the dark involving massive adjustments and reinterpretations of the evidence.

It must be disconcerting to the atheist who stakes his faith on the basis of such ‘science’ that previous scientific knowledge was only wrong by such a large margin! The age of what science calls ‘modern man’ has to be doubled and an additional two hundred thousand years added to human history. Never mind, the foundation is as solid as ever. Really? Much better to believe the unchanging account God gives in His word. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…

I’m of the opinion that if you misrepresent atheists and purposefully propagate lies, myths and fallacies about them, then you do nothing more than solidify and temper the rationality of their mindset. You are in effect doing a great disservice to any means of spreading the Good Word.

For example, the title of your post is factually incorrect in two instances:

    a) Not all atheists are scientists, or even know the first thing about the principals upon which the rigour of modern science is based;

    b) Disbelief in something does not require faith — that is a logical absurdity.

Not only that, but you have created a blatant contradiction in the title; even if its premise were true. As we all know, Faith is the suspension of logical reasoning for the belief in something that is not evidenced — there is no getting away from that fact. This is wholly incompatible with the scientific field, which is built upon evidence, proofs and testability.

Can you see where I’m going with this? I’ve only discussed the title so far, so what makes you think that the targeted reader would be willing to look beyond the disingenuous nature of the title? Curiosity? Mirth?

Now, on to the article that you were “interested to read”. Avi Gopher’s team uncovered that tooth way back in 2006, yet they still have not performed any dating techniques on it ….. in what is almost 5 years!! Suspicious? You bet it is. And what’s more it will lead anyone endowed with the gift of genuine inquiry to dig deeper into the story[excuse the pun]. What is disturbing is that once you have found the source of the story, it has little resemblance to the AP press release that you have cited above. If you wish to see what Avi Gopher thinks of the press release, as well as the official press release and paper referenced, then follow this link.

Now that we have established that the story you cited is in fact not the whole story, we now need to call into question your assertions that atheists must be disconcerted that their “faith” in science has in this case left them with knowledge that is “wrong by a factor of 100%!”, whatever that is supposed to mean.
Again, you are not doing us any favours by stating this kind of nonsense because you are unwittingly(or not?!) highlighting one of the greatest strengths of modern science: its testability. If new data becomes available through experiment or observation which is contrary to an existing theory, then the theory is either dismissed outright, or modified within the constraints that the new data presents. What is so wrong about that?

If we are going to fight the Good fight, then I’d suggest that we consider raising the bar as far as honesty, intellect and integrity go — or get comfortable with continued humiliation!

Thank you for your comments. Am I to assume from what you say that you actually have an interest in spreading the truth of God?

      The facts remain that:
      1. Atheism is as much a belief system as faith in the God of the Bible. The Atheist believes that there is no God.
      2. Whether scientists or not, ultimately atheists deny the existence of God on the basis of evolutionary ‘science’ of one kind or another.

I have no desire to publish any comment that is factually incorrect and simply took the news story I read at face value. You will notice that I preserved the ‘if’ in the citation and used it in my own comments about the story. However, the untested theories of evolutionary science, which been presented dogmatically as facts, have routinely had to be revised changed or abandoned altogether a short time later. All this is in contrast to the unchanging word of God upon which I stake my life, my soul and my eternity.

    Fine Urodeles,

Having myself been an Atheist for 23 year, coming from a family of Atheists and still having the majority of my family professing Atheists, I can most assuredly tell you that the claims made about Atheists on this website are true. One does not need to be a scientist to faithfully hold on to the claims of science. The fact is, Atheists hold onto claims made by science as the basis of their beliefs, and they hold onto many of them as fact, when they are in fact theoretical and unprovable. This requires faith! It requires an immense amount of faith actually, especially when this institution called \science\ proves itself to be in error on past claims almost daily.

As Fine Urodeles got it very much right, just one thing to add: why would a *hypothetical* difference of 200 000 years in one specie necessarily make a difference to the “whole picture of evolution”? Evolutionary theory is based on solid reasoning supported by solid evidence, a virtue any form of dogmatism will never claim. Evolution deals with the way life emerged and was changing with regard to all species that are around and that went extinct. Evolution DOES NOT stand and fall on where and when the first Homo sapient lost his teeth. Bear that in mind – such absolute statements simply will not stand.
