PROBABLY no God???

The Kamloops atheist Society and the Centre for Inquiry in Kelowna have announced plans to run this advert on buses in the Kamloops, BC and Kelowna, BC areas in January 2011. It is one of two sponsored by local and national atheist groups. See the other ad here.

1. Atheism offers no real certainty whereas the gospel offers CERTAINTY and SECURITY.

In some ways it is strange to see the use of the word probably used in this advert. However, since atheists are aware that they cannot definitively prove that there is no God, and to avoid making a claim in an advertisement that they cannot support, the word probably is used.

There are no ‘probablys’ in the Bible! God’s word and the gospel hope it reveals are described as:

  • “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:” (2Peter 1:19 AV)
  • “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast…” (Hebrews 6:19Hebrews 6:19
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

    19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

    AV)

God deals in absolutes and certainties because He is absolute and certain.

2. A knowledge of the true God is not the source of worry but of PEACE.

It is true that man’s religions inflict a heavy load upon their adherents. The stress of a works-based religion is intolerable for the concerned soul. Wearisome labour and toil is the lot of many who join themselves to false religion of one kind or another – including the religion of atheism! Isaiah the prophet captured this concept wonderfully in his contrast between the God of Heaven and the false gods of the heathen recorded in Isaiah 46:1-4Isaiah 46:1-4
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

46 1 Bel boweth down, Nebo stoopeth, their idols were upon the beasts, and upon the cattle: your carriages were heavy loaden; they are a burden to the weary beast. 2 They stoop, they bow down together; they could not deliver the burden, but themselves are gone into captivity. themselves: Heb. their soul 3 Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb: 4 And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

. The false god had to be carried; the true God carried His people from birth all the way though life. That is the difference between true and false religion. One has to be carried while the other involves being carried by the God we worship.

There is a peace of soul and of conscience that on God can give to sinful mankind. Consider these statements:

Atheism may induce a comatose state of carelessness in the soul but it cannot give peace of conscience or a rest of heart in the face of time’s challenges and eternity’s reality.

3. The stress-free life offered by this ad is a fiction and can never be realized.

It is not a reality as atheists themselves know in the depths of their heart. It is a deep-seated discontentment that actually forces such an advertising campaign to rail upon God! The promise of an absence of worry is a fiction because there IS a God. God Himself has said: “…the way of transgressors is hard.” (Proverbs 13:15Proverbs 13:15
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

15 Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.

AV) It is hard because of transgression, or, rebellion against God and His laws. The man who sets himself against God cannot be worry-free because God is against him! His sin will bring him into trouble, and ultimately to the misery of death and of a lost eternity.

In urging men to stop worrying and forget about God these ads are doing them a grave disservice. This is truly the advertising of a spiritually harmful philosophy. For any who are influenced by the ads there awaits the solemn awakening described in Scripture:
